Introducing The Homestead

Atop Sugar Hill at the crest of Rt. 117 and corner of Sunset Hill Road stands the Homestead Inn, one of the oldest family operated inns remaining in America today.

Founded by Moses & Sarah Aldrich, Sugar Hill's first permanent settlers on the original King's Grant, it has been handed down through seven descending generations to stand today as an authentic example of Early American innkeeping. The charm and hospitality of a bygone era are to be found at The Homestead.

In use and on display at the Inn are accumulated heirlooms and family possessions dating back to the great, great, great, great grandparents of the present day owners, for the enjoyment of today's guests.

Hand hewn virgin timbers, wide pine boards, hardwood flooring all taken from the family property add to the authenticity and atmosphere of the inn. Collections of glass, china, silver, brass and copper make evident the succeeding generations and the pride they took in their home.

Built in 1802 the original farmhouse replaced the crude log cabin that served as their first home. More than 100 years ago, in 1898, the farmhouse was expanded to its present size, to accommodate more "city boarders".

So it remains today, with few changes, so as to preserve the heritage and friendly, unpretentious charm of this historic landmark.

Breakfast Menu

The dining room, pine-paneled with timber cut on the farm and the exposed original hand hewn beamed ceiling, is the perfect backdrop for the family collection of antique porcelain cyrstal and silver.

Tables are set with one-of-a-kind ceramic plates depicting area history, hand painted by Grandmother Essie Serafini. The finishing touch is provided by handsome goblets in blue, amethyst and crystal, and napkins in unusual napkin rings.
